    This How do I shows you how to input a Return not necessary/Further return not necessary notification.

    If you do not know the client’s Australian business number (ABN) and/or tax file number (TFN) you can find the client on the directory.





    Enter the TFN of the client in the Your clients TFN/ABN field.

    Choose Lodgment status income tax from the drop-down menu.

    Select the Search button.

    Lodgment status - income tax screen will be displayed populated with data for the current year and previous three years.


    Select the Return not necessary button.

    Return not necessary - Income tax screen will be displayed.


    This screen enables you to select:

    • a specified year/s for which the client has no obligation to lodge an income tax return, or
    • the year from which the client has no further obligation to lodge an income tax return.

    If you need more information about eligibility, select the Lodgment essentials link.

    To advise that a return/s is not necessary:

    • Select the Client has no obligation to lodge an income tax return for the financial year/s ending: radio button.
    • Select either:
      • Select all, or
      • the year/s for which you are making the request.
    • Select the Next button.

    To advise that no further returns are necessary:

    • Select the Client no longer has an obligation to lodge further income tax returns, commencing from the financial year ending radio button.
    • Select the year from the drop-down menu.
    • Select Next. 

    This transaction will be processed within two business days.

    If your request is for the current year or three prior years, you can check that it was successful by reviewing the status on the Lodgment status - income tax screen. The changed status will be Not necessary.

    If your transaction is unsuccessful, you will be contacted within two business days.
